3 Questions To Ask Before Buying Drapes

Posted on: 6 December 2016

Determining the right drapes for your home is a bit more complicated than you might think. To find the right ones, you have to consider more than just the size of the window. If you are buying new drapes for your home, here are some questions to ask yourself.

What Is the Function of the Drapes?

Drapes can sometimes be more than just the covering over your windows. They can serve various functions, including complementing the room's current décor. Therefore, you need to factor in what function you want the drapes to serve.

For instance, drapes that focus more on creating a certain ambience, such as a historical atmosphere, tend to puddle on the floor. Puddling drapes does not lend itself to functionality. Puddling requires having drapes that are several inches longer than needed.

By contrast, hovering the drapes allows for you to open and close them with ease. The drapes can extend near the surface of the floor or even lightly touch them, but they can still be moved without issue.

Is Your Ceiling High or Low?

Although your ceiling might not seem important when selecting drapes, it is. Your drapes can help to make your ceiling appear to be higher or lower by hanging it at certain levels.

If you have low ceilings, hanging the drapes several inches higher than the window can make it seem as if the room has a higher ceiling than it actually does. You can add drama to the overall look by going higher, too.

For an even greater illusion, you can not only hang the curtains high, but also out on the walls. By hanging them out on the walls, the ceiling not only appears to be higher, but the room can look larger. You can install blinds or shades to help control the light in the room.

Should You Opt for Custom or Off-the-Shelf?

There are many reasons why you should consider custom drapes, including the fact you can get a tailored look. The drapes will fit perfectly to your windows' dimensions while taking into account your desired look.

However, custom window treatments are not always in the budget. Off-the-shelf drapes can be substituted, but it is important to look for high quality drapes. Although they are not custom, they can still be used to complement your room's appearance.
